manga that I like the most

Page history last edited by Charles-A. Rovira 11 years, 7 months ago

I have several criteria for liking animé (artwork, character development, plot line etc.) Some of these manga meet at least one but possibly more of these.

Some of these are incomplete, ongoing manga and some are over and done with but are worth checking out.

I'm NOT putting links to these as there are several, sometimes redundant sources. (Okay, I'll put the links in for MangaReader)

These are sometimes forced not to give links to the manga because of licencing agreements.

I recommend checking the sites I gave links to in the front page. Some of these series have WikiPedia entries.

I'm not giving away plot lines or spoilers. That's for reviews at OtakuGeneration (which really be おたくぜねちおん.)

I'm skipping over the juvenile dreck, and crappy artwork.

I'm giving you a list of the manga that I read more that one episode of, which usually means that I read all of the episodes.

The manga:

  • 1/11 Juuichi Bun no Ichi is a rarity for me. A sports manga with heart.
  • Accord is one of the new style South Korean manga (long scrolling page like "Welcome To The Convenience Store") that I am just devouring. Its a page turner for summer 2012.
  • Addicted To Curry is another manga (like Mixed Vegetables) all about FOOD! Yum :-)
  • Ah! My Goddess: (あああっ女神さまっ [Aa Megami-sama]) Flights of Fancy, (I have just discovered a site with the manga and its got a lot more episodes. :-) [This one* が あああっ女神さまっ お すき,すき...すき ;-]) I found the manga at http://www.mangareader.net/ Its got a lot more stories than the animé. Kosuke Fujishima (藤島康介 『こすけふじしま』) is a great manga artist.
  • Ai Ga Kami wo Korosu Toki,
  • Ai Kora (its actually Aicolla) is a fun little read about, uh, body parts. Hechi not funeral :-)
  • Aiki, Boy a manga that's all about fighting techniques & echi/hentai
  • Akuma To Love Song  looks like its going to be an interesting read. Very moving.
  • Alive, (its only ten chapters so far, but its pretty riveting,)
  • Alive - The Final Evolution (Bigger than "Alive" but much, much weirder.
  • Angel Densetsu is a hilarious manga I discovered while reading another manga (the best kind of way to do it.) Its is not well drawn but it manages to be well drawn enough that the comic effect in enhanced.
  • Amnesia Labyrinth is a creepy little read about a Japanese high school student and his three sisters (two real, one step.)
  • Ane Doki [ {}] What is it with Japanese and underwear? ;-)
  • Aoi Hana is a lovely tale about a lesbian and her friends, (There,s more about it here),
  • Aphorism This is a weirdie.
  • Arakawa Under the Bridge (is why I love manga. This tale couldn't be stranger if I'd thought of it. Its a romp through a swamp under a bridge with a normal human, a Venusian and a frog. [Ok... He's a kappa. {I'm just starting it.}])
  • Asu No Yoichi is a fun bit of fluff featuring martial arts, a hick samurai from the sticks, a big town dojo lots of confusion over matters of the heart, and lots and lots of pantsu shots. :-)
  • BaggataWay a manga about lacrosse (yep, the amerindian sport from Québec.) I never liked team sports, 'till now.
  • Baka And Boing (aka Baka to Boin) is a piece of echi that fun for summer 2012.
  • Balancing Toy is a captivating one for summer 2012.
  • Banquet Box is in the new/old style of a long scroll containing all of the illustration. Still too early to tell if its going to be good but it seems like it.
  • Barajou no Kiss is a manga about some unwanted gifts.
  • Bartender is living proof that there is nothing quite as fascinating as work, specially someone else's.
  • Batting Female Doctor, Saori [女性ドクター、沙織バッティング {read the first word again. :-}] Its based on a premise as loufoque as I have ever encountered. Her treatments all seem to involve a metal baseball bat with a red cross painted on it.
  • Black Bird is another of these imaginative romantic yet terrorizing Japanese stories.
  • Black Paradox is a crazy little manga about a group suicide that gone awry.
  • Bleach (I like the animé even though the manga is pretty much more detailed and diversified.) (Yes, I read & watch 'em both. :-)
  • Blood Alone a fairly interesting manga.
  • Boy of the Female Wolf (It appeals to the gender bending part of me [Its so hard to know one's true identity.].)
  • Bokura Ga Ita is a potential car wreck but thus far, its ok.
  • Bride if the Water God is an "artistic" maga and its one of the better ones out there. Reminiscent of xxxHolic in drawing style. Turns out its Korean. This may reveal more about the South Korean psyche. I'll make a point of buying some Canadian beer and preparing Eugene, my Korean friend, before he get here in August. [Left-> Right, pausing @ 34]
  • Change 123  is a pretty and pretty exciting manga. (Would mage an excellent animé). Very echi on its way to being deadly serous before finishing well. :-)
  • Corpse Party Blood Covered is a new one on my. So far its managing to catch my attention.
  • Cradle of Monsters is one of the bloodiest manga I've seen.
  • Crazy Girl Shin Bia is an awful little manga. It represents some of the worst artistic rendering out there but the story in intriguing enough to keep me turning the pages.
  • CUBE X CURSED X CURIOUS is promising to be an interesting echi manga.
  • Cynthia the Mission  is a vile, violent manga about socio-psychopaths that I just can't stop reading. Its a real fucking page turner.
  • Dance in the Vampire Bund (The animé is pretty good/faithful take but the manga is pretty damn good by itself.)
  • Darker Than Black
  • Darker Than Black- Shikkoku no Hana Think of this as a do over.
  • Deadman Wonderland. A dark and twisted tale of some pretty fucked up self-righteous power abusers.
  • Defense Devil is a manga that I'm still not quite sure of. Okay I'm sure now. This is a fun read and its become a real page flipper. I wholeheartedly recommend it. (I like stories that screw with my expectations.)
  • Dengeki Daisy is a take of a hacker, and his sister. The hacker's been killed and his sister fell on hard time. Seems like Japanese kids are prejudiced too. The hacker's a meme not an ethos so hacker culture is not really explored. Its really a romantic tale.
  • Dispatch is a crime/police story about a newbie to the force.
  • Doku Hime  is another one of those nearly sadistic little psychopathic little Japanese tales about poison (doku) princesses (hime.)
  • Domina no Do! is a kinky little tale. Way kinky... Wow... Weird way kinky...
  • Inu wo Kau [犬をめざしカウ {Toward the Cow Dog}] is something really weird I found. A manga about dogs. I owned a cocker spaniel so I know something about raising dogs. This is just too weird...
  • Drug On is a weird one that seem to be mystical (in an interesting way.)
  • Eden is a new manga for 2012 that's actually worth writing up.
  • Faster than a Kiss is a cute lovey dovy tale.
  • Fairy Tale is the manga source for the animé and is far ahead story-wise.
  • Freezing is a maga to accompany an animé that I just started. Based on what I've seen (its really violent, bloody, echii starring a bevy of pneumatic babes,) I'm going to enjoy this.
  • Fractale is one weird little manga (its also out as an animé.)
  • Full House Kiss is a fun, romance little manga which is hiding a big mystery and a lot of minor ones.
  • Ga Rei is an odd but captivating tale of somebody from an old Japanese family and a modern boy...
  • Gas Mask Girl is a devilishly odd piece of manga.
  • Get Love! is a cute little story of romance ... and soccer.
  • Girls of the Wild is a long form manga I just happened upon. Its pretty good too.
  • Girl Saurus is another discovery.
  • God Does Not Play Dice Speaking of Einstein, or like him anyway, this strange little tale is based on God playing dice with someone's fate.
  • Gwisin Byeolgok is a captivating little Korean manga that I found online while searching the directories.
  • Hana to Akuma is a devilish little tale.
  • Hakoiri Devil Princess is a devilish little tale of a princess from Hell, literally, a human and ... then it gets complicated.
  • Hanako to Guuwa no Tera is an interesting paranormal detective story, if you're into allegory. Man... This gets weird (I like it! [It gets ever weirder, and I like it even more.])
  • Haruyuki Bus I'm still reading this one from the beginning. Okay, its actually got some interesting stories and its well drawn (okay, its a little kawai, but only a little.) Its actually quite charming.
  • Hayate Cross Blade intriguing manga.
  • Hayate The Combat Butler is an oldie but a goodie.
  • Hiiro Ouji is an exorcist, vampire story for 2012.
  • Hinadori Girl is a manga about a kawai maid robot.
  • Hito Hitori Futari is a manga about a political angel... For summer 2012.
  • Hoozuki-san Chi no Aneki This is a weird one about brothers and sisters and step-sisters...

  • Hourou Musuko is a weird gender bender but it seems to be pretty good. (The animé is still to new to be determined but...)

  • Hokenshitsu no Shinigami this is about one creepy sensei.

  • Ichiban Ushiro no Dai Maoh [一番のうしろは大魔王を {Behind most of the Great Satan}] is another one that I like. It takes a while to warm up to it, but its theme is the Devil King.
  • I’ll Make You into an Otaku, so Make Me into a Riajuu! is a promising one I picked up for summer 2012.
  • It’s Not My Fault That I’m Not Popular! is an angst filled though not serious manga about a girl misfit for fall 2011.
  • JUSAKA - She Xue Yi Shi (Dr. Bloodsucker) This one starts with a bang, right through a kid's chest. (OUCH!)
  • Kaichū! looks like something I enjoy: Archery and cross-dressing...
  • Kamisama Dolls about big mysterious mechs.
  • Kagetora was a good read. Something else très Québecois.
  • Ka Na Me Mo [ か な め も { Me Too And I (? gotta love these Nihongo titles)}] The quality of the artwork overcomes my reticence against the kawai factor.
  • Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners is a new manga for 2011.
  • Kaichou wa Maid-sama! The manga counterpart to the animé. I like reading ahead, what can I say?
  • Kaitai Shinsho Zero, just started reading thin one. Seems interesting... Doctors with, uh, Meji attitude. ;-) Disease demons Reminds me of "Carcinoma Angels" by Harland Ellison.
  • Kanojo no honnou {彼女の本能; 桃色心机爱上你; Her Instinct) looks like a smutty little  manga. I'm going to enjoy this.
  • Karakuri Odette is a heartwarming manga about a girl without one (hers is mechanical.)
  • Katsuko Working! is a new manga about education, yeah, education.
  • Kimi Ni Todoke [means "you {kimi ni} notice {todoke} {The "ME" is unspoken."}] (same as the animé)
  • Kimi Ni XOXO is a little manga about a very little person.
  • Kimi No Iru Machi (君がいる街 [literally means "You have city" or "Your Town Il(?) but translated as "A Town Where You Live" I would have translated it as "Lake Woebegone meets the Hiroshima Hinterlands, with a dash of Peyton Place") A fun little manga that drags the reader in and the pages just melt away.
  • Kimi to Boku is another of those  charming high-school tales for fall 2011.
  • KissxSis (I know, its a guilty pleasure. What fucked up mess is Keita [けいた] going to get into next. ;-)
  • Kubera is another of there new/old style "scroll" type mangas where the entire chapter is laid out on a single page.
  • Kure-nai I'm still making my mind up about this one.
  • Last Game is a cute manga for summer 2012.
  • Ladies V Butlers is a well drawn and well translated little tasty treat with the usual obsession for young ladies underwear [ぱんちー {panties}] and chichi [ちち {breasts}]. The artwork is, uh exquisite. (Its also an animé,)
  • Lock On camera nuttyness
  • Loose Relation Between Wizard and Apprentice now that's a title only the oriental mind can concoct. BTW Google translated it as "ウィザードと弟子の間に裸の関係" which it then re-translates as "Disciple relationship between wizards and naked" (Somebody's got hetai on the brain. :-)
  • Love in the Mask is a new one from Korea that just captured me. Its not the art work which is average, but it the story. Let's see what transpires. Its actually interesting... The fascinating tale of how and why one might become a bodyguard to the rich and famous...
  • Love SOS is an entertaining manga about a deceased father in the yakuza, a daughter who was blinded because she witnessed the murder, a move to Korea and some eye transplant sugery. And that's where I am. Oooo... This is getting creepy. I've just "met" the parents and brother of the donor. Rather eerie...
  • Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer (or Wakusei no Samidare [惑星の五月雨] which re-translates to "Planet summer rain") is another reason why I love the Japanese imagination.
  • Mahou Sensei Negima is an interesting tale about a young, very young, teacher. He just happens to be a mage, has a growing retinue of friends (only some of which are male, [only some of which get to keep their clothing intact as each adventure unfolds. :-]) They changed translator around episode 60 and pluralizations again rear their their ugly heads. I hope this person either goes away soon or becomes enlightened. My reading pace is slowing and the noise of my incompetence-induced bruxism, (gritting and grinding of teeth,) is starting to get to me. Phew!!! He's either got better or been replaced. Believe or not, having the subject as singular and the verb as plural, or vice versa, or the subject, verb or object being out of accord is actually hard on the meninges. Collective nouns some of which are not pluralized, like cannon, regardless of whether we're talking about one cannon or twenty cannon, or whether we talking about murder (as in a murder of crows) pods (as in peas or orca) pride (as in a pride of lions,) etcetera... Crap I just found out there was an animé. Figures...
  • Megalomania is great. Its reminds of the comics I used to read in Metal Hurlant A.K.A. Heavy Metal in the 'States. Its like Aeon Flux ... but better.
  • Mirai Nikki seems to have hooked me from the get go. Imaginative plot. Very twisted... God as an amoral bad guy playing games to emtertain himself.
  • Monk! a silly little manga about, uh, a monk's purity,
  • My Mother and the Game Room Guest  is a silly little manga about a mother, and a mangaka (manga artist,) as seen through the eyes of her young daughter. He gets to live with mother (and daughter) when when screws up big time and needs to get his act straight and she needs to money for taking care of this wastrel.
  • Nakanmon (aka Crybaby, Dont Cry! or Don't Cry Anymore) is a sweet little Manga for Summer 2012.
  • Nana (ナナ) (I liked the animé big time. It's because, no matter how well drawn, you need audio to properly describe music.)
  • Nana to Kaoru now this is spicy さどまそ [Sado Maso] へんたい [hentai]
  • Nanaco Robin is a cute manga about a fall from grace. Engaging plot twists, Its actually worth reading, beyond the usual melodrama.
  • Nanako To Guuwa no Terra [はなこ と ぐうわ の てら {Nanako is and partly for the Guuwa}] (Yeah, I didn't think much of the title either.) But its pretty good.
  • Neko de Gomen is a manga about a girl, her super-genius but impractical dad/sensei and his experiment which turns her into chimera (with cat genes which are expressed when she gets stressed.)
  • No Bra (の ぶら ) This is not coming to animé soon. :-)
  • Noisy Girl reminds me of my own obsession with guitar playing.
  • Noragami is an interesting new manga for summer 2012,
  • Nurarihyon no Mago is a pair, animé and manga, about a reluctant kid that is 3/4 human and 1/4 youkai.
  • Nyankoi! is a manga I have stumbled upon about a kid who's allergic to cats, so the universe in its perversity ...

  • Ogawa to Yukaina Saitou tachi is a cute manga about a liltle girl who is picked on until...
  • Oishii Kankei [おいしーかんけい {Delicious Relationship}] What the heck ... I love manga about cooking. (Like a typical Québec mélodrame there's a funeral.)
  • Omamori Himari looks interesting.
  • Omamori no kamisama [ お守りの神様 { God's Amulet } ] looks like an interesting read. Strike that. Its ... [chibi {li'l kid}] but its kawaii{cute}]. Its well drawn enough to be appealing. Now lets see if there's a plot to it. (I have my standards.) Okay, he is NOT chibi he only looks like that when he's had to expend himself.
  • Oto X Maho is a fun read about a magical girl who happens to be a boy...
  • Otosuki, Otoko no Ko wa Maid Fuku ga Osuki!? is a short one for sumer 2012.
  • Princess Resurrection is another of the weird little series of tales set in modern day Japan with creatures from every age. But well written and imaginative.
  • Sakura no Ichiban (which Google translates to Cherry Top) is interesting in that it happens three years after the great earthquake in Japan which destroyed Japan. Its strange and humorous to have a manga depict gangsters outside a girls-only institution in 1920's Tokyo.
  • Sankarea is another manga that I just found engaging as hell.
  • Say I love You is another of those manga that seems that all guys should read to learn about how the other half of humanity feels. (If only life worked that way. :-)
  • Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei a charming little manga about suicide. (I swear, only the Japanese could make a manga with an image of somebody [literally some body] dangling by the neck from a tree limb in a park, over a kicked-away foot-stool, being stared at by a middle school girl.) Actually, its a pretty good read.
  • Shade - The Other Side of Light, (Nope... nothing really catchy about it.)
  • She is Scary is a cute Korean manga about high school life.
  • Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume [幸せの喫茶のSanchoume {Tea of Happiness Sanchoume}] another light comedy. I'm getting to quite enjoy the Japanese sense of romantic comedy. This is nice. Ok. They changed translators around chapter 22, and this new one is utter crap. Reading has gone from being a pleasure to a pain. Its days like this I think I could do a better job. So jarring that its unreadable. I'm going to learn Japanese if only to be able to read these in the original. Bookoff, we have a date this Saturday in Manhattan. The translation is so lousy that its utterly ruining it for me...
  • Shikabane Hime. I just discovered this one after watching all of the animé. Lets hope its like Ah! My Goddess and has new episodes. Nope its not.
  • Shinigami-sama ni Saigo no Onegai wo Why do I like Japanese dead people so much? :-)
  • Shinigami Alice is a disturbing, violent, twisted sick fuck of an manga that I just cant get enough of.
  • Shinyaku Ookami ga Kuru is an amusing little tale about a boy (who's actually a werewolf) and a girl (who's really a "erratic" ditz,) as they hunt down German occult phenomena.
  • Shin Mazinger Zero starts with the apocalypse. Lets see what follows... Toss this piece of used toilet paper away.
  • Shinya Shokudou is a poorly drawn little manga (a bit reminiscent of the artwork on the album "Duke".) The stories themselves are quite engaging.
  • Shitsujisama no Okini Iri (Butler-sama's Favorite) is a fun domestic manga I found wandering while wandering around.
  • Sidooh Great sword fight. I can do with out the post plague Edo references and the whole Mel Gibson vibe, but a great read.
  • Someliere is about a somelière. What else? It seems to be cut up a bit abruptly but episode one ends with a real cliff hanger.
  • Sora no Otoshimono an unassuming little manga, but fun to read. Its about an angel(oid) who might not be an angel and the schmuck who's saddled with her. (What is it with the Japanese and their obession with panties. Check out episode 7  :-)
  • Suicide Island is an odd version of survivor where there is no way to get off of the island.
  • Suki Desu Suzuki-kun seems well drawn and engaging enough that I'm following it.
  • Suzuka (I have just encountered some, uh, uneven, yah, that sounds at least charitable, uneven translation about episode 45 that is painful for eyes to read. Now that I see Nihonjin failing at English, I really feel better. I can do a better job that this once I get my crap together. Its fascinating and extremely instructive at the same time. I have got to get some untranslated manga and try my own hand at this. The translation process across cultures and over alphabets and syllaberies, is, at the risk of sounding a bit like Spok, utterly fascinating. Okay. I'm done with it and it was fun. It ended like most Québec stories with a pregnancy, a marriage (in that order) and happily. Except for needing a funeral, it was just a Québec story taking place in Japan. (By the way, they canned the translator they had used in the middle (though they still have problems with plural prepositions.)
  • Switch Girl, no, not that kind of switch (though we've already seen the other kind of switch boy,) but its switching from ひめさ [himesa {princess(on)}] to ずぼらな人 [Zubora na hito {slob(off)]].
  • Taboo Tattoo is another one of these inventive mangas about hidden powers, fighting secrets and high school kids.
  • Tal is a new-style manga that looks interesting.
  • Tamago No Kimi as an engaging little reda. Hope to catch more of it.
  • Tasogare Otome X Amnesia This is one about a ghost with a sense of humor.
  • The Big O is a confusing little manga about exstence without memories,
  • The Sleepy Residents of Birdcage Manor. (the Japanese [torikagoshou no Kyou mo Nemutai Juunintachi {The mo today torikagoshou Nemutai Juunintachi}] makes no sense!) This one is new. It looks interesting and has some weird pluralization errors. That has to be the Achile's heel of Nihongo. That and verb tenses.
  • The World only God Knows is a cute little read. Turning out to be longer that I thought.
  • Thousand Years Ninetails is an intriguing one for winter 2012.
  • To Aru Kagaku No Choudenjibou which seems to be the inspiration for (or more likely a derivative of) Animés called "Toaru Kagaku No Railgun".
  • Tokyo Kareshi is turning to be like Kimi no Todoke but better paced.
  • Tora Dora this one is yet another school tale but there seems to be a twist.
  • Trans Boy is a new one for summer 2012 (and seems to be over.)
  • Transfer Student Storm Bringer is a case of Korean mistaken identity.
  • Umineko no Naku Koro ni is another weird one
  • Umisho is nothing but fan service masquerading as a manga (but nice to look at regardless. :-)
  • Ushio and Tora lost to read in this one.
  • Variente is another new style mange for summer 2012.
  • Watashi ni xx Shinasai!  love looked at (stared at) from the other side of a pair of glasses. A school-age (like when else would it be set, right,) emotionally empty author(ess) of cellphone vampire novels (something utterly Japanese) is discovering about love the hard way, and utterly confusing her cousin, who has seriously got a sister complex, and her "I don't want to lose to him" sort-of boyfriend.
  • Welcome To The Convenience Store is a manga about working ... wait for it ... at a Korean convenience store.
  • Witchcraft Works is an intriguing little manga that I have high hopes for.
  • Witch Hunter is a intriguing tale, but I'm getting a little bored with the witches.
  • White Garden is a new manga that looks like its going to be novel enough to keep reading.
  • Working, its a manga about, uh, working,
  • XBlade, a surprisingly moving piece of cap et épée.
  • xxxHolic (great series and the animé has some great music.)
  • xxxHolic Kei (great series, and I downloaded all of the music. It is with some relief that the series continues past the, uh, absence, [yeah, that's mysterious enough to be a come-on, instead of a spoiler,] of the original store owner.)
  • XO Sister is a great manga, a little ecchi, a lot super-super.
  • YM is a twisted little tale of Japan before the invention of the cell phone. (Its amazing the crap that people get up to when they think their word is law when shedding a little truth reveals them as obvious baddies.[Shit! Some of Episode 29 Watery Grave's scans are corrupt and don't come out at all.])
  • Zero, an interesting series about ESPer

That's not counting reading hundreds of sub-par manga. (Sleep! I'll sleep enough when I'm dead! Sleep is for the weak!)

*) Give me a break. I'm still learning and I could use a pen-pal to guide me through the application of what I learn.
